ABSOLUTELY STUNNING hand-embroidered tunic from the mountains of Guatemala.
This style tunic (or huipil) was originally worn in ceremonies and weddings. The embroidery is exquisite and features symbolism dating back to the Pre-Columbian era. The floral detail of the neckline is INCREDIBLE!
As a tunic, the Santa Lucia can be worn loose and has a flattering drape that isn't overpowering. We also think it's amazing when belted and worn over pants or a skirt!
In the words of our artisan partners: "It is an art that is, unfortunately, dying because the ladies are not wearing the ceremonial huipiles as much as they used to. Our weavers learned this art from their ancestors, so it is difficult to find someone who can weave and embroider in this style". We are determined to help keep this art alive!
The Santa Lucia collection is made to order. Please allow three weeks for your one-of-a-kind piece to arrive. (Shipping times vary).
Materials:
Hand-woven and hand-dyed cotton
Perspective of size: Tunic shape has a flattering drape, sleeves come well below shoulders. The bottom edge hits below the hips.
Hand-woven and embroidered in Guatemala.
Guatemalan weavers are mainly women, who derive natural dyes for their threads from vegetables and minerals. They still use the Mayan back-strap loom along with traditional spinning and embroidery techniques.
